Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD)
Supplements studied for esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD).
Overview
Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) preparation has one reviewed supplement: N-Acetyl Cysteine (NAC) (WA 44; low effect size, low evidence, medium trust; one study). Oral NAC taken before upper GI endoscopy reduced bubbles and mucus, making it easier for clinicians to see the lining. About half of patients using NAC had clear views without bubbles, compared with about one-third on placebo.
Using NAC together with simethicone appeared to improve visibility further in the same research. Evidence rests on a single trial. See the evidence reviews below for full detail.
