Reperfusion injury

Supplements studied for reperfusion injury.

Overview

Melatonin (1 review covering nine small studies) is the only supplement studied for reperfusion injury after heart attack. Intravenous melatonin given within about two to three hours of a heart attack may improve heart pumping function and reduce the area of damaged tissue. Oral melatonin taken over several weeks did not show similar benefit, suggesting effects may depend on route and timing of administration.
