Dilated cardiomyopathy
Supplements studied for dilated cardiomyopathy.
Overview
Evidence for supplements in dilated cardiomyopathy is sparse and low trust. L-Carnitine (WA 52; low effect size, high evidence, medium trust) may improve heart pumping in children with primary L-carnitine deficiency, a noted cause of heart muscle weakness in children. Small trials also reported improved heart function in adults with cardiomyopathy, but findings need confirmation.
Selenium (WA 44; low effect size, low evidence, medium trust) may reduce cardiac death in Keshan disease, a specific cardiomyopathy linked to deficiency. In a small trial of pregnancy-related heart weakness with low selenium, three months of supplementation did not improve symptoms or survival. The heatmap and evidence reviews below summarize both entries.
