Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
Supplements studied for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
Overview
Irritable bowel syndrome has broad supplement indexing (17 supplements, 40 studies). Melatonin, Vitamin D, Brewer's Yeast, Probiotics, and Resveratrol each carry medium effect size, medium evidence, high trust, WA 64. Melatonin may reduce abdominal pain and bloating in some IBS trials. Brewer's yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae CNCM I-3856) may improve pain and bowel habits, mainly in constipation-predominant IBS. Vitamin D results are mixed across doses and designs.
Probiotics are rated possibly effective though the summary here is brief. Resveratrol has limited single-study data suggesting possible symptom benefit. See the heatmap and evidence reviews below for full rankings.
