Myocarditis
Supplements studied for myocarditis.
Overview
For myocarditis, L-Carnitine (WA 56; medium effect size, low evidence, medium trust) has medium-strength evidence from research in children with diphtheria, where oral DL-carnitine at 100 mg per kg daily for four days appeared to lower myocarditis and death rates compared with no carnitine. Astragalus (WA 48; low effect size, medium evidence, medium trust) has low-strength evidence mainly from Chinese studies suggesting injected astragalus with usual care may improve inflammation and heart function in viral myocarditis, with reduced damage markers and few reported side effects.
Evidence for both supplements remains limited in scope and quality, and findings may not generalize beyond the populations studied. The heatmap and evidence reviews below summarize individual trials.
