Overview
Only Melatonin is indexed for beta blocker–induced insomnia, with three studies and medium ratings (WA 64) for effect size, evidence, and trust.
Beta blockers such as atenolol and propranolol can lower natural melatonin levels and cause trouble sleeping. Melatonin supplementation may improve sleep in people taking these medicines—for example, 5 mg nightly with atenolol, or 2.5 mg an hour before bedtime with atenolol or metoprolol in indexed trials.
Evidence is limited to a small number of studies and has not been tested across all beta blockers. See the evidence reviews below for details.
