Periodontitis
Supplements studied for periodontitis.
Overview
Garlic (WA 56; medium effect size, low evidence, medium trust) has medium-strength evidence for periodontitis. Aged garlic extract taken twice daily for 18 months reduced gum pocket depth in mild to moderate disease in one study, though gum recession did not improve. Borage (WA 44; low effect size, low evidence, medium trust) reduced gum swelling in one small 12-week trial but did not lower plaque compared with placebo.
Evidence is limited to one trial per supplement. Garlic appears more promising for long-term gum pocket improvement, while borage showed only partial benefit.
