Supplements studied for prematurity.
Overview
Three supplements have limited evidence related to prematurity outcomes. Algal Oil (2 studies) given to breastfeeding mothers of very premature infants may support growth in baby girls but not boys, with no effect on brain development by 18–22 months. Iron (2 studies) in breastfed premature or low-birthweight infants may improve height and reduce anemia risk without affecting weight or cognitive outcomes.
A single study of Vitamin D found that a pre-delivery injection in women at risk of early birth lowered serious breathing problems in infants. Evidence remains preliminary across all three. See the heatmap and evidence reviews below.
