Temporomandibular disorders (TMD)
Supplements studied for temporomandibular disorders (TMD).
Overview
Melatonin is the only supplement studied for temporomandibular disorders, in one trial of women with jaw pain from TMD. Taking 5 mg at bedtime for four weeks lowered pain by almost half, improved pain tolerance, reduced need for pain medicine, and improved sleep compared with baseline.
Melatonin carries medium effect-size, evidence, and trust ratings based on this single study. Whether findings extend to men, other TMD subtypes, or longer treatment remains uncertain. See the heatmap and evidence review below for trial details.
