Traumatic ulcers

Supplements studied for traumatic ulcers.

Overview

Aloe is the only supplement studied for traumatic ulcers, specifically painful mouth ulcers caused by orthodontic appliances. In one clinical trial, 80% aloe gel applied to the gums twice daily for a month after getting braces greatly reduced mouth ulcers compared with chlorhexidine gel, with only about 6% developing ulcers versus 81% with chlorhexidine.

Aloe also reduced gum bleeding and swelling with no reported side effects in this study. It carries medium effect-size, evidence, and trust ratings. See the heatmap and evidence review below for trial details.
