Trichotillomania
Supplements studied for trichotillomania.
Overview
N-Acetyl Cysteine (NAC) and Milk Thistle are the two supplements studied for trichotillomania, with mixed results across age groups. In adults, NAC up to 2400 mg daily for 12 weeks reduced hair-pulling urges and behavior by about 40%. However, the same doses and treatment length did not outperform placebo in children with hair-pulling disorder.
Milk Thistle at 150 mg twice daily for two weeks then 300 mg twice daily for four weeks did not appear helpful in people aged 12 to 65. Both supplements carry low ratings overall. See the heatmap and evidence reviews below for more detail.
