Neonatal encephalopathy
Supplements studied for neonatal encephalopathy.
Overview
Melatonin is the only supplement listed for neonatal encephalopathy, with low-strength evidence from one study. In newborns with brain injury receiving therapeutic hypothermia, added melatonin did not clearly lower death rates but may have reduced seizures and scan-visible brain injury.
This mixed result comes from a single trial with low trust ratings. It is too early to determine whether melatonin meaningfully improves outcomes in neonatal encephalopathy.
