Narcolepsy
Supplements studied for narcolepsy.
Overview
Evidence for narcolepsy supplements is limited and low-rated. Tyrosine (WA 32; very low effect size, low evidence, medium trust) may slightly reduce tiredness in one small study but did not improve muscle weakness, sleep, or attention. Caffeine (WA 40; low effect size, evidence, and trust) may improve alertness and reduce eye-closure time from sleepiness, though evidence is sparse and caffeine is not a primary narcolepsy treatment. L-Carnitine (WA 44; low effect size, low evidence, medium trust) reduced total daytime dozing by about nine minutes in one eight-week trial but did not affect nap frequency or overall sleepiness.
None of these supplements has strong support for narcolepsy. The heatmap and evidence reviews below summarize the available trials.
