Acute kidney injury (AKI)

Supplements studied for acute kidney injury (AKI).

Overview

Two supplements are indexed for acute kidney injury (AKI) across three studies, both with low ratings (WA 40).

Melatonin may help protect kidney function and lower AKI risk in at-risk people, though standard kidney blood tests often do not change significantly. More research is needed to confirm any protective effect.

Milk thistle evidence is unclear. One hospitalized-patient study reported fewer kidney problems with a silymarin product versus placebo, but hospital stay and dialysis needs were unchanged, and the analysis warrants caution. See the evidence reviews below for trial-level detail.
