Alcohol use disorder
Supplements studied for alcohol use disorder.
Overview
Three supplements are indexed for alcohol use disorder across eight studies.
Kudzu (WA 64; medium effect size, medium evidence, high trust) may help heavy drinkers consume less alcohol over several weeks, including reduced beer intake before binge sessions, but does not appear to reduce craving or maintain sobriety in chronic addiction. Acetyl-L-Carnitine (WA 64; medium effect size, medium evidence, high trust) given intravenously during withdrawal may reduce cravings and low mood in the first week; oral use afterward is uncertain, though it may aid memory in those with cognitive problems.
L-Carnitine (WA 44; low effect size, low evidence, medium trust) has insufficient evidence. See the heatmap and evidence reviews below for trial detail.
