Overview
Three supplements are indexed for antibiotic-associated diarrhea across 18 studies.
Inulin (WA 44; low effect size, low evidence, medium trust) and Kefir (WA 32; very low effect size, low evidence, medium trust) did not prevent diarrhea in the available pediatric trials. Saccharomyces boulardii (WA 56; low effect size, very high evidence, medium trust) may cut antibiotic-associated diarrhea risk by about half in many adults and children, though not every study found benefit— including null results in some older adults.
Typical S. boulardii doses ranged from 250 mg once or twice daily in children to 250–500 mg two to four times daily in adults during antibiotic use. Results may depend on population and regimen. See the heatmap and evidence reviews below.
