Altitude sickness
Supplements studied for altitude sickness.
Overview
Two supplements are indexed for altitude sickness across two studies, both with low ratings.
Alpha-Lipoic Acid combined with vitamins C and E (WA 32) does not appear to prevent or treat altitude sickness in healthy people ascending to high altitude. N-Acetyl Cysteine (NAC) (WA 32; very low effect size, low evidence, medium trust) is also unclear: one small study found 400 mg daily did not improve eating or symptoms versus placebo or vitamin E.
Overall supplement evidence for altitude sickness remains very limited. See the evidence reviews below for trial detail.
