Hyperparathyroidism

Supplements studied for hyperparathyroidism.

Overview

Calcium is the sole indexed supplement for hyperparathyroidism (7 studies; medium effect size, high evidence, high trust, WA 68). Oral calcium may lower parathyroid hormone (PTH) levels in people with kidney problems who develop secondary hyperparathyroidism.

In older women, calcium together with vitamin D may help correct hormone imbalance and also lower the chance of hip fractures. Large observational research also suggests that getting more calcium from diet or supplements may reduce the risk of developing primary hyperparathyroidism, with at least 500 mg from supplements appearing relevant in some analyses. See the evidence reviews below for context and trial detail.
