Overview

Caffeine is the only supplement indexed for hypnic headache (2 studies; WA 44; low effect size, low evidence, medium trust). Hypnic headache is a rare type that wakes people from sleep, often after age 50, and caffeine is frequently described in case reports and expert reviews for this condition.

Drinking a strong cup of coffee at symptom onset or before bedtime may both relieve episodes quickly and help prevent future ones, according to observational summaries. However, no large randomized trials exist, and evidence rests mainly on reviews of case series rather than controlled data. See the evidence reviews below.
