Overview
Vitamin D is the sole indexed supplement for hypoparathyroidism (2 studies; medium effect size, medium evidence, high trust, WA 64). People with hypoparathyroidism or pseudohypoparathyroidism have low blood calcium because parathyroid hormone is deficient or ineffective.
Taking vitamin D by mouth raises blood calcium in these conditions. High doses of vitamin D2 are effective, and giving vitamin D or calcitriol after thyroid surgery may help prevent low calcium levels.
