Overview
Milk Thistle is the only supplement indexed for hypoxic liver injury (1 study; WA 44; low effect size, low evidence, medium trust). Hypoxic liver injury refers to liver damage from low oxygen, and early emergency-department research tested milk thistle extract in this setting.
Participants took milk thistle three times daily for three days, and blood markers of liver injury decreased compared with baseline expectations in that early work. Long-term benefit is unknown, and more research is needed to know whether milk thistle helps beyond short-term marker changes. See the evidence review below.
