Somatic symptom disorder
Supplements studied for somatic symptom disorder.
Overview
St. John's Wort is the only supplement studied for somatic symptom disorder, and it shows the strongest available evidence in this area. Two studies found that taking 600 mg daily of a specific extract by mouth for six weeks reduced symptoms by about 45% compared with placebo.
St. John's Wort carries medium effect-size, evidence, and trust ratings based on these two trials. While results appear promising, the evidence base remains modest and has not been replicated extensively. See the heatmap and individual evidence reviews below for more detail on these findings.
