Statin-induced myalgia
Supplements studied for statin-induced myalgia.
Overview
Vitamin D is the only supplement studied for statin-induced myalgia, and findings are mixed. Some studies suggest vitamin D may reduce muscle pain from statins. In one small trial, people who stopped statins due to muscle pain were able to restart after beginning vitamin D, mostly among those who had low levels beforehand. Another study found 50,000 IU of vitamin D2 weekly for 12 weeks helped relieve muscle pain.
Vitamin D carries low effect-size, evidence, and trust ratings. It remains unclear whether supplementation helps broadly or mainly in people with low vitamin D. See the heatmap and evidence reviews below for more detail.
